The INVITATION TO Follow JESUS

Jesus invites us to follow Him because He has so much more in store for us. We often settle for getting through when Jesus offers an abundant life. This offer to follow Him is presented as an invitation, but by accepting this invitation we make decisions that will change the way we live in pursuit of the abundant life that Jesus promises.

Picture this: Jesus stands by the Sea of Galilee, encountering ordinary fishermen. He extends an invitation that transcends the mundane, offering a life of purpose and fulfilment. He tells them, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." (Matthew 4:19 ESV). The call to follow Jesus isn't a command; it's an invitation open to all, regardless of their circumstances.

Following the Leader

When we decide to follow Jesus, we're relinquishing control over our lives and allowing Him to lead. It's like a game of "follow the leader," where we mimic the example and direction of the leader. This involves seeking God's guidance in our decisions, big or small, and aligning ourselves with His plans.

Changing the Purpose of Life

Following Jesus means shifting our life's purpose. Just as fishermen became "fishers of men," our focus changes from building our personal kingdoms to building God's kingdom. This doesn't negate our own aspirations; rather, it aligns them with God's overarching plan. Seek His kingdom first, and all things will fall into place.

Treasure of the Heart

Our hearts often hold treasures that define our lives. Yet, Jesus asks us to place Him at the center, making Him the ultimate treasure. He doesn't seek a divided heart; He longs for a heart that values Him above all else. When He is our foremost treasure, our decisions, actions, and resources align with His will.

Counting the Cost

Following Jesus isn't a promise of worldly comforts. Jesus reminds us to count the cost, for the path may lead through trials and hardships. This doesn't mean we'll be devoid of blessings; it means our perspective shifts from earthly gains to eternal treasures. We choose to prioritize God's kingdom above temporal comforts.

The Time to Respond is Now

Don't postpone your response to Jesus' invitation. Often, we delay by saying, "Not now, when I'm settled," or "Once I achieve this." Yet, Jesus calls for an immediate response. Remember the disciple who wanted to bury his father? Jesus' response holds true today: "Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead."

The Transformation Awaits

As we look to Peter's journey, we find hope for our own shortcomings. Like Peter, we may stumble, but Jesus calls us to rise and follow again. Embrace the invitation, let obedience guide you, prioritize God's kingdom, make Jesus your treasure, count the cost, and answer now.

Know this: God has more in store for you. Just as Peter's journey led to immeasurable impact, your commitment to follow Jesus will unlock blessings beyond measure. When you feel lost or unsure, remember that the Holy Spirit whispers, "Follow me." Step into the "more" that God has prepared for you. Let your journey of faith be marked by obedience, devotion, and unwavering trust. Your path may have challenges, but the reward of a deeper relationship with God is worth every step.
