1. Man - A Three Part Being
1 Thessalonians 5:23
1.1 Man consists of spirit, soul and body.
- 1.1.1 Spirit: the inward man - sometimes referred to as the "heart" though this frequently refers to both spirit and soul. 1 Peter 3:3-4
- 1.1.2 Soul: the mind, intellect and emotions. Proverbs 6:32-33
- 1.1.3 Body: the part that houses the inner man, the vehicle that allows and facilitates the inner man to operate on the earth. 2 Corinthians 5:1-7
1.2 Implications on Death Luke 16:19-31
1.3 Salvation is three fold.
- 1.3.1 Spirit - Justification: the new birth experience, sins forgiven, now in right standing with God. Romans 5:9-10
- 1.3.2 Soul - Sanctification: the renewing of the mind, an ongoing process of becoming more Chris like. Working out of what is within. Romans 12:1-2
- 1.3.3 Body - Glorification: a new body, not subject to sin, poverty or disease. This only happens when Jesus returns, for both those alive at the time and those who have already died. 1 Corinthians 15:42-55
2. New Creatures in Christ
2 Corinthians 5:17-21
2.1 Foundational to progressing in Christ, is an understanding of this passage:
- 2.1.1 We are new creatures in Christ - old things HAVE passed away, new things HAVE come.
- 2.1.2 God gives man a brand new start in life, the slate is wiped clean.
- 2.1.3 This is obviously from a spiritual perspective as man still has to change his thinking (the soul is relatively untouched by the new birth) and still has the old body.
- 2.1.4 What then is new? The spirit of man is recreated (justified) so that there is NO trace of sin in man whatsoever. He is just as if he never sinned!
- 2.1.5 This gives man the new start in life. Romans 5:1-5
- 2.1.6 As a result of the new birth - justification by faith we have:
- 2.1.6.1 Peace with God.
- 2.1.6.2 Access into grace.
- 2.1.6.3 We can glory in tribulations - because we know we are victorious.
3. Changing Kingdoms
Colossians 1:13:
3.1 What does it mean to be delivered out of one kingdom and transferred into another kingdom?
- 3.1.1 When a person accepts Christ, he is literally taken out of one kingdom (Satan's kingdom) and put into another (God's Kingdom).
- 3.1.2 This means that there should be many changes in a person who accepts Christ: Ephesians 4:22
- 3.1.2.1 A believers thinking changes, he now thinks from a perspective of eternity, different reaction to sin.
- 3.1.2.2 Language changes, no longer doubt, unbelief, profanity, but faith, hope and edification.
3.2 Functioning in God's Kingdom.
- 3.2.1 God is the Creator, and as the Creator He has the privilege of creating everything as He sees fit. He gives us a handbook (The Bible) which essentially is the way of functioning in the Kingdom of God.
- 3.2.2 God is just and righteous and He has set and established laws on the earth. (A law is a principle that is established to govern believers' behaviour - it works every single time it is applied).
- 3.2.2.1 When a believer places a demand on a law (e.g. the law of gravity) it will not fail. By definition it works EVERY TIME. Romans 8:2
- 3.2.3 When believers operate according to these laws (or principles), they experience the abundant life that God has prepared for His new creation.
4. God's Plan for Man
4.1 God's Eternal Purpose Ephesians 1:3-6
- 4.1.1 God's plan for man from "before the foundation of the world" was that man be "holy and without blame". God's initial plan was not salvation.
- 4.1.2 Only when man fell did salvation come into the plan. Paul says something similar in Romans 8 but according to the description here, God's purpose of man was that he would be conformed to the image of Christ. Romans 8:28-30
- 4.1.3 In order to get to the eternal purpose, man had to make a choice (otherwise man would have been a robot) - key to destiny is free will, man having choices to make.
- 4.1.4 But before we look at The Fall of Man, we need to look at the Fall of Satan, as this also was not God's original intention. God did not stop with the goals of His eternal purpose in spite of Man's Fall and Satan's rebellion.
4.2 The Fall of Lucifer Luke 10:17-18; Ezekiel 28:12-15; Isaiah 14:12-14
- 4.2.1 We can draw the following conclusions from these passages:
- 4.2.1.1 Satan was full of wisdom, perfect in beauty, anointed and blameless.
- 4.2.1.2 He had the ability to choose (free will).
- 4.2.1.3 Unrighteousness was found in Lucifer.
- 4.2.1.4 He rebelled against God and he was thrown out of heaven.
- 4.2.1.5 He influenced one third of the angels to enter into his rebellion and they were also cast out of heaven. Revelation 12:4
5. Man's Dominion, Authority and Responsibility
5.1 God gave the works of creation to man. Genesis 1:27-28
5.2 God made man a little lower that Himself. Psalm 8:4-6
6. God Crowned Man with Glory and Honour
6.1 God crowned man with His glory.
6.2 God's commandments to man.
- 6.2.1 Be fruitful, multiply and fill the earth.
- 6.2.2 To subdue the earth and rule over creation.
7. The Fall of Man
7.1 Man is made in the image and likeness of God.
7.2 Man was created in a different class of being than every other part of creation.
Genesis 1:26
7.3 Man is a different species than the animals.
- 7.3.1 Man was created for a specific purpose - to have fellowship with God - he would have to be like God to have fellowship with Him.
- 7.3.2 An animal can be a companion to man but cannot fellowship with man.
7.4 God gave man a free will, in order for him to live any way he chose.
- 7.4.1 Adam's choices was simple: God or self! This choice was represented by the two trees.
- 7.4.2 If Adam chooses the Tree of Life, he chooses God. If he chooses the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, he chooses self. Genesis 2:16-17
- 7.4.3 The consequences of the choices are gigantic: If Adam chooses the Tree of Life, he actually chooses God and therefore chooses to partake of the life of God and so will achieve the eternal purpose, becoming conformed to the image of Christ.
- 7.4.4 If he chooses the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, he chooses to go his own way and therefore will need a saviour - this is the beginning of the plan of salvation.
7.5 The serpent deceived Eve but Adam was not deceived, he disobeyed. Genesis 3:6
- 7.5.1 She turned and gave to her husband and he ate.
- 7.5.2 He chose to follow his wife and disobey God
Obedience will bring a blessing, disobedience brings a penalty.
7.6 Their eyes were opened and their covering was removed. Genesis 3:7
- 7.6.1 Their eyes were opened to evil and everything that death had to offer.
- 7.6.2 They had never known death up to that point because they had been full of the life of God. Romans 5:12
8. The Consequences of Adam's Transgression
Romans 5:12-21
8.1 Satan gained a foothold in the dominion that God had given to man.
- 8.1.1 Jesus recognized Satan's authority in when He called him "the ruler of this world." John 14:30
- 8.1.2 When Jesus was tempted by Satan, Satan offered Him the kingdoms - if Satan had no right to give Him the kingdoms then this was not a genuine temptation. Matthew 4:8-9
- 8.1.3 Paul calls Satan "the god of this world". 2 Corinthians 4:4
- 8.1.3.1 The fact that Jesus Himself and Paul recognized such titles as "ruler" and "god" mean that they themselves recognized Satan's' authority.
8.2 Adam and Eve's nature went from life (the nature of God) to death, the sin nature became part of them.
- 8.2.1 Sin is a nature-not "acts of wrong-doing."
8.3 From now on, every descendent of Adam will be born with a sin nature. (V12) - however this sin nature affects behaviour, not destiny (V13).
8.4 Instead of the life of God abiding in them (if they had chosen the Tree of Life), the nature of death took its place in them.
8.5 Death now ruled and reigned in them instead of God's absolute, abundant, wonderful life. (V17)
8.6 They lost their dominion and became subject to the natural, physical realm.
8.7 Fellowship with God is now restricted - only in a limited fashion, based on the shedding of blood of an innocent animal.
8.8 Instead of being conscious of their righteousness, (their right standing with God), they became conscious of sin.
8.9 Death, together with sickness and poverty enter the world.
8.10 All of these consequences were to be reversed through the work of Jesus on the cross.
9. God's Plan to Redeem Man
9.1 For all intensive purposes, Adam has given to Satan his legal right of authority and dominion.
9.2 God must legally gain it back.
- 9.2.1 How could God justly restore righteousness and fellowship?
- 9.2.2 God could not justly drive out Satan because the world system no longer belonged to God.
- 9.2.3 God could not justly destroy man and start over because man's sin had to paid for.
- 9.2.4 God could not have justly changed man's nature because Satan legally obtained lordship over man; God must justly and legally redeem man.
- 9.2.5 Justice demands that a crime be recognized and the appropriate penalty for the crime be paid. There was no way to make the penalty less.
- 9.2.6 If man was to ever receive God's nature and become righteous again, the penalty for sin must be paid! If man was not to go to hell, someone must pay the penalty!
- 9.2.7 Before the foundation of the world, God designed the Plan of Redemption that would pay the penalty and free man from a sin nature and from going to hell.
- 9.2.8 Rejecting Jesus is the only act that keeps people from God. (Not suicide nor murder nor any other ACT can send one to hell just as no ACT can keep one from being saved.
10. What Jesus Accomplished in Redemption
10.1 He had to "Qualify" as the Redeemer
- 10.1.1 Jesus had to be free from the nature of death. John 5:26
- 10.1.2 He was free from the dominion of Satan. A physical body gave Jesus legal entrance in the earth to walk as a man, but He had to perfectly please God. Luke 3:22
- 10.1.3 The seed of the Redeemer must be of Divine origin and not natural. Satan could have no legal claims or authority over the Redeemer.
"When conception takes place and new life begins, the blood cells in this new creation are from both father and mother and the blood type is determined at the moment of conception and is thereafter protected by the placenta from any flow of the mother's blood into the fetus. The Bible is explicit that the Holy Spirit was the Divine Agent who caused Jesus' conception in the womb of Mary. This, therefore, was not a normal conception, but a supernatural act of God in planting the life of His already existent Son right in the womb of Mary, with no normal conception of a male with the female. As the Blood type of the Son of God was a separate and precious type, it is inconceivable that Mary could have supplied any of her Adamic blood for the spotless Lamb of God. All the Child's Blood came from His Father in heaven by a supernatural creative act of God. Jesus' Blood was without the Adamic stain of sin."[1]
- 10.1.4 He had to be sinless. Jesus had to meet Satan in temptation as Adam did - yet without yielding to sin.
Luke 4:1-13
10.2 Jesus had to become man's substitute and pay the penalty for sin - shedding His blood for the sins of the world.
10.3 Jesus had to conquer Satan, and in so doing, He conquered death. Colossians 2:15; Hebrews 2:14-15; Philippians 2:9-10
10.4 Once Jesus conquered death He had to be justified in spirit and made righteous.
1 Timothy 3:16
10.5 Jesus become our Substitute
- 10.5.1 Jesus Who once lived in the presence of God became a man and fully pleased God on earth. Now He must become man's sin SUBSTITUTE. He must take man's place.
- 10.5.2 The whole human race must be represented in Him as He hung under judgment on the cross.
- 10.5.3 Jesus takes on the sin of the whole world. At this point in time, God, the Father, turned His back on Him.
- 10.5.4 Once Jesus paid the penalty for sin, He was made righteous and that righteousness is given to anyone who accepts Jesus. 2 Corinthians 5:17
- 10.5.4.1 It was through one man death entered; and through one man the human race was made free. Romans 5:17
11. The Meaning of Righteousness
11.1 Righteousness comes by way of the New Creation. It removes sin consciousness (that robbed us of fellowship with God, of confidence and assurance in the presence of God).
11.2 Righteousness means "right standing" in the presence of God without the sense of guilt, sin or condemnation. A person who is declared righteous is justified, declared free from guilt or blame, cleared and pardoned of wrong - just as if he'd never sinned.
- 11.2.1 Righteousness actually restores man to a standing before God on the same level that Jesus had.
11.3 Boldness / Confidence
- 11.3.1 Jesus was fearless in the presence of God and before Satan.
- 11.3.2 He knew his legal right to stand in the Father's presence.
- 11.3.2.1 He was fearless during a violent storm. He was absolute ruler over the laws of nature.
- 11.3.2.2 He was confident in the presence of lack. He fed 5,000 people with a little bread and fish. He paid taxes from money taken from the mouth of a fish.
- 11.3.2.3 He was not afraid to call Lazarus from the dead, in the presence of a large crowd.
- 11.3.2.4 He had no sense of inferiority in the presence of death, sickness or disease, lack or natural disaster.
11.4 Righteousness restores all that Adam lost in the fall. It instils a new relationship as a son and all the privileges of being a child of the Father in Heaven.
- 11.4.1 With a restored righteousness comes restored authority, dominion, fellowship and image. A believer becomes God's "under-ruler". Romans 8:16-17
- 11.4.2 Satan has made the church so conscious of sin and unworthiness that they feel too inferior to break his power.
- 11.4.2.1 This is the reason why there has been so much opposition to the message of righteousness.
12. Between the Cross and the Resurrection
12.1 Jesus Conquers Satan
- 12.1.1 After Jesus died, His spirit descended into the lower parts of the earth.
Ephesians 4:8-10; Matthew 12:40
- 12.1.2 Jesus conquered Satan. Because the penalty had been paid God could now make Jesus alive in the spirit right in the presence of Satan. Colossians 2:13-15
12.2 Made Alive In the Spirit
- 12.2.1 God took the sin nature and laid it on the spirit of His Son. Jesus paid the wage of sin: death, through the shedding of His blood.
- 12.2.2 Did Jesus die spiritually? - Firstly we need to define spiritual death: Spiritual death is separation from God.
- 12.2.2.1 Because a spiritual being cannot die (God created spirits to live forever), spiritual death cannot mean death of the spirit.
- 12.2.2.2 He who knew no sin was made to be sin and the wage of sin is death.
- 12.2.2.3 After He paid the penalty and justice was fully met, He received Eternal Life. He had to be born from death to life -The first to be born again. Colossians 1:18
- 12.2.2.4 In the midst of death, Jesus was made alive in the spirit.
1 Peter 3:18
- 12.2.2.5 He couldn't be made alive in spirit unless He first "died spiritually" or was separated from God. Jesus not only died on the cross physically, but He died spiritually. 1 Timothy 3:16
He couldn't be justified in the Spirit unless He was first condemned in the Spirit.[2]
13. Raised And Delivered With Him
13.1 Jesus was the first to be born again from death to life. Those who accept Him are born from death to life. 1 Peter 1:20‑21
13.2 The Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead dwells in believers' giving them life.
Romans 8:11; Ephesians 2:4‑6
13.3 Seated With Him. Not only are believers raised up together with Him, but "he has made us sit down together"-giving us joint seating with Him-in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.
13.4 When right standing with God was restored so was authority. Matthew 28:18
13.5 When Jesus ascended He delegated His authority to the church. Acts 2:36
13.6 Jesus arose Lord and Master over death, hell and the grave.
